The Family Tree

Maliha Fairuz Mahi

|

I have a family

and my family has a tree

older than my oldest ancestor

who died

it stays          sometimes rotting

oftentimes    growing

it only bears  bitter fruits

some rot even before a sun kiss

some get eaten by the birds

in exchange they hum their sorrow

sometimes a

                      fruit

                              gets

                                      picked

but the plump flesh

cannot mask the rotten core

the beautiful color

does not mask the foul smell

it ends beneath the tree again

each one worse than the previous

an infinite geometric progression

people           say it's poisoned

some             say it'll die soon

But                after every hailstorm it grows even bigger

and                the fruits grow more bitter

I have a family

and my family has a tree

my family tree never bears good fruit
